Lamoille Canyon Scenic Byway

The Ruby Mountains are located 20 miles south of Elko, Nevada in the northeastern corner of the Silver State. The Rubies are among the state’s wettest and most lush mountain ranges. Lamoille Canyon lies in the very heart of the range and offers some of the most awesome vistas found in Nevada. The Lamoille Canyon Road snakes through glacially-formed Lamoille Canyon and around the base of 11,249-foot Ruby Dome.

You will find a parking area and trailheads, for long and short hikes at the end of the 13.5-mile paved road, at the 8,800-foot level. The area boasts more than 100 miles of hiking trails guiding you through gorgeous alpine scenery. Road conditions can vary greatly in the back-country even during the warmer months. Be sure to call ahead for road conditions. Call the USFS Headquarters at 775.738.5171.
A snowy curve at the trailhead at the top of Lamoille Canyon. c.2002 F.L. Sawyer. Lamoille Canyon is my second favorite mountain twisty and easily the closest. If you think Nevada is all desert and the asphalt of Las Vegas, you couldn't be further from the truth. The road I believe has 35 MPH controls for the better part of it's length and a few spots of reduced speed due to blind corners, rock outcroppings, and near switch-backs.
The drive alone is worth a visit but you will be treated to the scenic wonders of the 'Alps of Nevada.' Bring your thirst for driving and a picnic lunch. Many areas line the road all the way to the top ending at the box canyon facing Liberty Peak. This is a protected wilderness area and the closest commerce is in the town of Lamoille 2 miles south of the Lamoille Canyon Road Scenic Byway turnoff. You will certainly enjoy your stay!
